Great! Now BPA Causes Asthma, Too

I’ve mentioned BPA a couple of times in various posts, but it seems like this little bugger just insists on staying in the news.

BPA or bisphenol-A is a chemical used in the production of plastic, especially hard plastics.  It catapulted to awareness not too long ago when it was found that BPA was leaching into baby milk or formula kept in BPA-containing bottles.

More recently, BPA was found to be a common component of the lining of canned food.  Unfortunately, it’s horrible for you.  It’s been linked to birth defects, hormone problems, reproductive issues… most likely because it acts in an estrogenic manner, meaning it mimics the female hormone estrogen.

Now you can add “asthma” to the list of charges against BPA.  Researchers found that mice whose mommas had been fed large amounts of BPA tended to have asthmatic reactions to a common allergen (something that can potentially cause an allergy).

Yet one more reason to avoid the canned and processed foods and stick to a whole foods diet!

Stay healthy!
