STD Rates Swelling In Seniors Due to Viagra (ZING!)

I guess we should all have seen it coming, but a report in the Annals of Internal Medicine declares that rates of STDs in older populations are dramatically increasing.  How much so?  Like 50%!

The authors of the report have a few speculations about the causes, but really, it’s no big surprise.  The massive spread of Viagra useage over the last few years has the population continuing to have sex into much older years.  So, of course they’re going to be exposed to STDs.  It’s not like STDs only want to live in young people.  They don’t care.  In fact, they’re quite non-discriminatory.

Compounding the problem, though, is the fact that older men seem to use protection a lot less than younger men, which is a little surprising.  You’d think that a man in his 50s or 60s would have enough sense to take some precautions, but it turns out, he’s probably just so happy to be getting it on that he doesn’t even think about it.

And, of course, at a certain age, the risk of pregnancy decreases so low, that perhaps they don’t even think about protection in terms of STDs.  But, really, seniors need to take the same precautions as the rest of us… so if you think you get a free pass on safe sex just because of your age, forget about it!  Get yourself some condoms just like the rest of us!
